Part-time PhD students struggle to find life-work-research balance
Part-time PhD students are in need of more support / Some part-time MBA-students may face similar problems and therefore the report could be worth to throw a glance at.
The UK national organisation for the development of doctoral researchers and research staff recently unveiled a report that underlines common perceptions confirming that it is increasingly difficult for part-time PhD students to juggle the competing demands of work, research and private lives.
As reported in the latest edition of THE online, the study was motivated by the striking discrepancy in completion rates for part-time students in contrast to full-time PhD students. The difficulties of creating and maintaining a workable life-work-research balance is considered a significant factor in the low completion rates of part-time PhD students (48%) in comparison with their full-time counterparts (76%).
According to the THE, the report makes a number of recommendations to provide universities and students with better support for a successful course of study, including improved communication between the institution and the student, targeted training for part-time students as well as a greater awareness of the difficulties specific to studying a PhD part-time.
